Speedtest.net seems the most fishy/infiltrated by ISPs. Speedof.me looks pretty solid, and netperf.tools has a pretty good set of analytic. Both use HTML5 instead of flash, so it should be more accurate. I’m just not sure what to so with all the different results

…Further questioning of the group narrows 3 principles constituting the answer.

How would I measure it? (Just time the game DL?)

I need a number of different metric, not just DL. UL, latency, etc.4

I’m using this to test out a number of VPNs, so I need something that is consistently repeatable, and wont be overly impacted by protocols, etc.

And then these two nuggets pop out:

All download clients show you the speed you’re downloading at, usually in KB/s or MB/s (vs Mb/s that your ISP uses).

Upload is a little tougher, maybe upload a large file to dropbox or google drive? Latency is easy, just ping google while running the test ping google.com -t

Since I assume you’ll be using this VPN for torrents sometimes what about downloading the Ubuntu torrent? It’s well seeded.

To conclude, it may be worth not using speedtest to test your wifi connection.
